At Uncomfortable Oxford, we love highlighting stories that challenge popular narratives!
Join us for regular series of 'short story corners', featuring diverse stories and voices from around the world which have been translated into English from another language.
Each session will feature a short story, each time from a different first language and region, with the translation readily available in the public domain. Participants are invited to a casual and informal online event to discuss story themes and content, while reflecting on how meaning is lost or gained through translation.
Meeting 4: Wednesday 22 July, 5:30PM BST
- Story: 'The Neighborhood Phone', by Gabriella Ghermandi, Translated from Italian by Giovanna Bellesia-Contuzzi and by Victoria Offredi Poletto
- Convener: Lydia Ludlow
- Themes: immigration, the idea of 'home', community, class, time
Meeting 5: Wednesday 5 August, 5:30PM BST
- Story: 'A Madman's Diary' by Lu Xun, Translated by Yang Hsien-yi & Gladys Yang
- Convener: Lunan Zhao
- Themes: illness, tradition & modernity, paranoia, community, diary form
Meeting 6: Wednesday 19 August, 5:30PM BST
- Stories: 'Falling Down Politely, or How to Use Up All Six Bullets Instead of Playing Russian Roulette' by Rasha Abbas, and 'A Bedtime Story For Eid' by Zaher Omareen, both translated by Alice Guthrie
- Convener: Malak Khalil
- Themes: storytelling, violence, memory, insiders/outsiders
The session will last 1h, will take place on Zoom, and the format will be open and casual. All the relevant details will be sent to you on the preceding afternoon.
